The Tennessee Volunteers landed themselves a versatile recruit in edge rusher Jonathan Echols, who plans to play tight end in college football in 2024. That's right. Edge rusher to tight end. The 6-4, 230-pound five-star recruit is Tennessee's first commitment for the 2024 class, though it certainly wasn't an easy one for the Vols. They had to fight off other top programs, who were looking to bring Echols in as a linebacker or defensive end. The two-way high school star spoke about why he chose Tennessee, per 247 Sports.

“Me and my family just feel like it’s a great fit for me,” he said. “Being able to talk to Coach G, just him being the OC and my position coach, it’ll just be a great fit for me with him being that.

“Coach G” is Alex Golesh, the Volunteers' offensive coordinator and tight ends coach, who was personally informed of the decision by Echols himself. The Heard County and IMG Academy star went on to speak about the “love” he felt from the coaching staff and the people around him.

Echols also specifically mentioned future Tennessee teammate and four-star Class of 2023 tight end Ethan Davis, who is expected to be utilized alongside Echols.

The 2024 recruit mentioned the “high-powered offense” that Tennessee has. The Volunteers ranked seventh in the nation in scoring, averaging 39.7 points per game in 2021.

Now, they're adding two of the most talented pass-catching recruits in the nation in back-to-back classes. Already a formidable unit, the Volunteers offense figures to be a force for the next several years.
