The Golden State Warriors have parted ways with veteran small forward Omri Casspi. This is according to a report from Chris Haynes of ESPN, who also stated that the Warriors needed to make such a move to accommodate Quinn Cook on their playoff roster.

“Golden State waives forward Omri Casspi to make room for the signing of Quinn Cook. The deadline to release a player on the final year of a guaranteed deal is April 8 at 5 pm ET.”

Cook, according to reports, is close to signing a multi-year deal with Golden State, thanks to his stellar play while two-time MVP Stephen Curry is out with a knee issue. That has likely played a big part in Golden State front office’s decision to cut ties with the 29-year-old Omri Casspi. The announcement of Casppi’s release from the Warriors came shortly after Cook delivered a 21-point performance, albeit in a 126-120 loss at home against the New Orleans Pelicans on Saturday.

This is a tough break for Casspi, who reportedly turned down higher offers last year in order to chase an NBA ring with a legitimate title contender, per Marc Stein of The New York Times.

“Very harsh numbers game catches up to Omri Casspi, who league sources say turned down more lucrative interest last summer from Brooklyn to go for a ring on a minimum deal in Golden State, only to be forced out when the Warriors had to manufacture a roster spot by Sunday for Cook.”

Casspi has not appeared in a game since Mar. 17 due to a right ankle injury, and his inability to stay healthy has been a problem for him this season.

In 53 games in Warriors uniform including seven starts, Casspi managed to average 5.7 points and 3.8 rebounds. He shot 58.0 percent from the field and 45.5 percent from three-point distance.
