Hall of Famer Kevin McHale would be shocked to hear that Kevin Durant will return to the Golden State Warriors after this summer. The recent chain of events and even a revealing interview with Chris Haynes revealed that Durant wants to chase his largest contract to date, a wish that could make it all the more difficult for the defending champions to keep him in the offseason.

“Anywhere but Golden State, honestly I don’t think he’s going to go back there,” McHale said of Durant on NBA TV. “I watch him and there’s something dysfunctional with that team right now. So I would be shocked if he goes back there.”

Many teams have freed up one max contract slot, but some are planning on freeing up two, like what the Brooklyn Nets and the L.A. Clippers have already done, boasting maximum flexibility. The New York Knicks, however, are one of the strongest suitors for his services, given the natural connection with business partner Rich Kleiman, a New York native with ties to the franchise.

“KD is going to go wherever he wants to go but I really could see him going and hooking up with another championship-calibre guy,” McHale said. “I know the New York fans will go crazy but him taking some guy and saying, ‘Let’s go here together, let’s go some place together.'

“I don’t think he’s going to stay in Golden State. I could see him hooking up with another free agent and saying, ‘Lets go here and win a championship together.’ I’m not sure what city it is going to be in, I don’t think it matters anymore.

“But I think he’s going to leave Golden State.”

Kevin Durant is having the best scoring season of his three-year run with the Warriors, and as many others have done, will look to capitalize on being at the peak of his game to net the deal of a lifetime — something that knocks the Warriors right out of the running, unless he has a change of heart and priorities.
