Washington Football Team veteran quarterback Alex Smith is one step closer to making his comeback on the gridiron. He's listed as active ahead for Week 5 game against the Los Angeles Rams, with Kyle Allen being named as the new QB1 and Dwayne Haskins being demoted to a third-string quarterback, according to ESPN's Field Yates. This is the first time Smith has been active since his devastating leg injury in November 2018.

The gesture made by Washington head coach Ron Rivera marked another milestone in Smith's comeback journey. He previously suffered a suffered a spiral and compound fracture to his right leg's tibia and fibula when he was sacked by two Houston Texans defensive linemen back on that fateful day nearly two years ago.

Due to the severity of the injury, Alex Smith eventually developed a life-threatening necrotizing fasciitis that resulted in sepsis, which required him to undergo a total of 17 surgeries. He bounced around four hospitals in a span of nine months on his long road to recovery.

To see Smith listed on Washington's active roster in the 2020 NFL season two years later is nearly unthinkable. Depending on Allen's performance, the longtime veteran might wind up taking over as the starting quarterback later in the season.

The Utah product had the best season of his playing career in his last healthy campaign back in 2017, tallying career-best numbers in passing yards with 4,042 and completions with 341. He also led the league with a passing rating of 104.7 through 15 games played for the Kansas City Chiefs.

At the right moment in time, Rivera is poised to pull the trigger and finally put Alex Smith back into action, which would bring things full circle in his bid for a successful comeback on the field. It's an incredible story of perseverance.
