Washington Football Team quarterback Alex Smith is the odds-on favorite to be named the 2020 NFL Comeback Player of the Year, per Dan Purdum of ESPN.

On Nov. 18, 2018, Smith broke the fibula and tibia in his right leg and many thought he would never walk again.

However, through countless surgeries and rigorous rehabs, Smith made his return to the field in Week 5 against the Los Angeles Rams after Washington starting quarterback Kyle Allen got hurt.

Alex Smith is the favorite at -330, followed by Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton, who are each listed at +420.

Two weeks ago, Smith was a 10-1 long shot to win the award at FanDuel, but the book trimmed his odds to 4-1 after Washington benched starting quarterback Dwayne Haskins in favor of Kyle Allen.

Even though Washington head coach Ron Rivera is going to start Allen in Week 6 against the New York Giants, it was still amazing to see Smith back on the football field. He went 9-of-17 versus the Rams for 37 yards in Washington's 30-10 home loss.

After the game, Smith told reporters it felt “surreal” to be playing again after everything he's been through.

“It was great to be out there, the feeling, the range of emotions, the good and the bad,” Smith said, via ESPN. “It's why I fought so hard to come back. Sometimes you can take it for granted. Certainly to be away from it for a couple years, I've missed it.”

Washington will likely miss the playoffs again this season, but the entire NFL family is thrilled that Smith is healthy.
