The Washington Football Team recently added another veteran presence in their locker room with the acquisition of quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick for the 2021 season. The team's other gunslinger in Taylor Heinicke spoke on Fitzpatrick's arrival and claimed that he is ready to compete with the veteran for the starting spot under center.

Despite the added competition, the former undrafted player shared his excitement to learn from Fitzpatrick, who has a ton of experience in the league.

Via Peter Hailey of NBC Sports Washington:

“It's going to be a fun battle,” Heinicke told Donaldson. “We're going to hopefully help each other. I'm looking forward to picking his brain, getting better as a quarterback in that way, and whatever unfolds, unfolds. But, again, I'm excited for the addition, I'm excited for this offense that we've put together.”

Fitzpatrick already took on a mentorship role to rookie gunslinger Tua Tagovailoa during his previous stint with the Miami Dolphins. He initially served as a starter in the first half of the 2020 season until Tagovailoa became more ready to lead the team on his own.

The tenured veteran finished his 2020 campaign with a total of 2,091 passing yards on 183 completions to go with 13 touchdowns in nine games played. The Dolphins were already set on Tagovailoa as their new QB1, which led Fitzpatrick to sign with Washington in the offseason.

On the other hand, Heinicke made a name for himself when he suited up for the team in the Wild Card Round against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He amassed 137 passing yards on 12 passes completed along with a lone touchdown in the tilt. Though Washington succumbed to a 31-23 defeat, the journeyman still impressed the team and earned two-year contract in the offseason.

Taylor Heinicke will definitely benefit with the arrival of Ryan Fitzpatrick at the helm, similar to how he learned the ropes by way of Alex Smith's mentorship last season. More than having an increased competition at the QB spot, the team just wants to get as much talent as possible in order to get over the hump and return to the playoffs in the 2021 NFL season.
