The Chicago White Sox are looking to maintain their spot atop the AL Central this season, but the team will be without some key players to start the year. With Lance Lynn out due to an injury and Tim Anderson suspended for two games, the White Sox were dealt an additional injury blow in the form of Yoan Moncada. GM Rick Hahn revealed Moncada is dealing with an oblique strain that will sideline him for as many as three weeks, per JR Fegan.

As a result of the injury, the White Sox are placing Moncada on the 10-day IL in order for him to recuperate and become pain-free. Hahn noted that Moncada, despite his desire to play on Opening Day, was dealing with pain while doing basic tasks such as laughing and sneezing, as well as when he swings the bat.

Instead of risking further aggravating the injury, the White Sox are shutting Moncada down temporarily in order to get him back to full strength.

Moncada is coming off a solid season for the White Sox in 2021, during which he slashed /.263/.375/.412 with 14 home runs and 61 RBI across 144 games.

In a corresponding move, the team recalled infielder Jake Burger from Triple-A Charlotte, bringing him up to the big leagues to fill in during Moncada's absence. Burger featured in 15 games for the White Sox last year, hitting 1 home run in 38 at-bats, striking out 15 times. He was Chicago's first-round pick in the 2017 MLB Draft and ranks as the organization's No. 7 prospect, so it'll be intriguing to see how he fares in his newfound opportunity.
