While Randy Wittman's tenure with the Washington Wizards is finally over, there are new reports as to what exactly led to his firing.

The 2015-16 Wizards finished 41-41 and missed the postseason for the first time in three years. The team clearly took a step back just a year after advancing to the semi-finals of the NBA playoffs and never looked like a quality team throughout the season.

One reason for the team's lack of chemistry may have been due to Wittman's favoring of certain players. J. Michael of CSN Washington reports that the former head coach favored guys such as Nene and Ramon Sessions.

Michael states the following in regards to Wittman's favorable treatment of Nene:

“I’m told by multiple persons with knowledge of the situation, it was Wittman’s outright refusal to ever call out Nene that was at the heart of it…Tensions were raised when the team would study game film and Wittman always was quick to call out the likes of Wall and Bradley Beal while Nene routinely received a free pass.”

As far as his treatment of Sessions, Wittman refused to call him out for his soft defense on pick-and-roll coverages:

“Even when it came to Ramon Sessions, who had a strong season as Wall’s backup and in the final year of his deal, Wittman curiously refused to criticize him for soft defensive coverages on pick-and-rolls. The perception became that Sessions is such a likable and great player to coach, Wittman didn’t want to mention him by name and as with Nene he’d blame the mistake on the collective instead of that individual.”

This is a bit odd, considering Wittman had no issue criticizing other players in public. He did so when it pertained to John Wall, Bradley Beal and Marcin Gortat.

If this is true, the alienation of the team's best players for players that were considered “likable” by Wittman's standards, was probably the coach's biggest mistake.

With Wittman out of the picture and Nene and Sessions due to become free agents this summer, the Wizards will likely look to start off fresh in 2016-17.
