The Washington Wizards stamped a high asking price on big man Davis Bertans ahead of the trade deadline for a reason: they want to keep him.

Although he is set to be an unrestricted free agent this summer, the Wizards were asking for two first-round draft picks in return for Bertans before the Thursday deadline, a price no other club was willing to meet.

Chris Mannix of Sports Illustrated notes that the Boston Celtics made “several strong offers” for Bertans but that Washington would not budge because it plans on re-signing the sharpshooter this offseason.

In 40 games this season, Bertans is averaging 15 points and 4.6 rebounds over 29.3 minutes per game while shooting 43.6 percent from the floor, 42.9 percent from three-point range and 87.3 percent from the free-throw line.

The Wizards acquired Bertans this past summer in a trade with the San Antonio Spurs, who were moving Bertans with the intention of signing Marcus Morris to a two-year deal. However, Morris reneged on the verbal pact and opted to sign a one-year contract with the New York Knicks.

Bertans was originally selected by the Indiana Pacers in the second round (42nd pick overall) of the 2011 NBA Draft but was immediately traded to the Spurs along with Kawhi Leonard.

The 27-year-old made his NBA debut during the 2016-17 campaign, playing in 67 games and registering 4.5 points across 12.1 minutes a night while making 44 percent of his field-goal attempts and 39.9 percent of his long-distance tries.

Bertans owns career averages of 7.6 points and 2.7 rebounds per game, connecting on 44.2 percent of his shots, 41.1 percent of his triples and 85.6 percent of his free throws.
