After a roller-coaster first season as Barcelona manager, Xavi is eyeing grand success for the 2022-2023 campaign.

In speaking after Barca’s 2-0 La Liga home loss to Villarreal, Xavi declared that the Catalan side simply can not go another season without winning a single trophy.

“In November, we were at a minimum,” Xavi said. “We have fulfilled the minimum objectives: we have finished second. Now soccer is over and the work in the office begins.

“We have to change many things to try to be more competitive and fight for titles. We cannot have another blank year.”

For the second time in the last three campaigns, Barca finished the season trophyless. It capped off La Liga play in second place behind Real Madrid. The side also failed to reach the finals of the Copa del Rey and UEFA Europa League competitions. More so, it came close to reaching the 2022 Spanish Super Cup Final, but Los Blancos were victorious in its semifinal clash with the Catalan powerhouse via a 3-2 win in extra time.

The offseason has not yet come for Barca, as it will meet the A-League All-Stars for a friendly encounter on Wednesday. Still, attention for all clubs across Europe is set to soon shift to the upcoming summer transfer window. The La Liga powerhouse heads into the transfer period with multiple dilemmas to address, including on just who will be its starting striker come matchday one of next season’s La Liga campaign.

For a Barcelona side that has gone through its fair share of ups and downs over the past year, high expectations sure will be on club president Joan Laporta to successfully retool the roster in the coming months.
