New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman faced multiple dilemmas over the past months regarding players on the team who hit free agency. He will once again deal with several such issues after the 2022 season, which will include the future of Aroldis Chapman with the team.

Overall, Chapman will play the upcoming season on the one-year extension deal that he added to his contract back in 2019. While there has been outside talk of the Yankees possibly being open to extending the veteran closer's contract, he is still set to hit free agency at the end of the campaign.

Chapman has opened up before about his aspiration to finish his career with the Yankees. When recently asked by ESPN’s Enrique Rojas on whether it is a “priority” to retire with the AL East powerhouse, he noted that he is still open to staying put with the Yankees.

“If God gives me the opportunity, yes,” Chapman said. “To stay here and finish my career here would be great.”

Chapman is coming off of a 2021 season where he posted a 3.36 ERA and blew four saves. He had roller-coaster performances over the campaign, which included his 11.42 ERA in the month of June.

Chapman may see slight changes in the way he will be used out of the bullpen in the 2022 season. Yankees manager Aaron Boone has noted that the seven-time All-Star may at times be rolled out to pitch in the eighth inning in order to simply keep him fresh throughout the campaign. Chapman is going along with the plan, as he recently noted that he is open to “whatever works.”

A crucial 2022 season awaits Chapman and the Yankees.
