Controversy emerged during the New York Yankees' weekend series against the Chicago White Sox, as Yankees third baseman Josh Donaldson drew the ire of White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson when he allegedly said “What's up, Jackie” during the two teams' game on Saturday. Anderson, who is black, said that he felt “disrespected” by the comment, with manager Tony La Russa adding that he thought it was a “racist” remark.

Several players on the White Sox, including catcher Yasmani Grandal and relief pitcher Liam Hendriks, came to the defense of Anderson with their rebukes of Donaldson. On Monday, the MLB which had said it was conducting an investigation, revealed the results of their findings: a suspension for the Yankees third baseman, as reported by James Fegan of The Athletic.

Per Fegan, Donaldson has been suspended for one game and has incurred a fine of an undisclosed amount for his comment directed at Anderson. MLB's Senior Vice President for On-Field Operations Michael Hill made the announcement.

In a statement, Hill said the following.

“Regardless of Mr. Donaldson's intent, the comment he directed toward Mr. Anderson was disrespectful & in poor judgment, particularly when viewed in the context of their prior interactions.”

The MLB made it clear. Much like what Yankees manager Aaron Boone said, the comment was a direction that Donaldson never should have taken with the White Sox star.

The Yankees third baseman had said that he joked with Anderson about the comments the White Sox star had made in a 2019 interview, where he said he felt like “today's Jackie Robinson” in his effort to break through the “have-fun barrier” in a sport that frowns upon individualism and personal celebration.

Donaldson, who was placed on the COVID Injured List on Monday head of New York's game against the Baltimore Orioles, plans to appeal the suspension.
