Former St. Louis Cardinals and current New York Yankees first baseman Matt Carpenter is pretty familiar with Cincinnati Reds ace Luis Castillo. Having faced Castillo often in his career when he was a member of the National League Central, Carpenter knew just how talented the Reds righty was. However, even the Yankees first baseman was blown away by what he saw at Yankee Stadium on Thursday night.

The Reds ace twirled seven innings of one-run ball, striking out eight Yankees while allowing just two hits. After the game, Carpenter raved about Castillo, He also said something that should make Yankees fans- and Brian Cashman- very excited. Here are his words, via Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.

“He looks the best I’ve ever seen him,” Carpenter said. “I hope he’s in pinstripes soon.”

Matt Carpenter said that Luis Castillo “looks the best he's ever seen him.” The Yankees first baseman went on to say that he hopes the Reds hurler is “in pinstripes soon.” What a message ahead of the MLB trade deadline!

Carpenter didn't even sugarcoat it either. He is flat out saying that Luis Castillo, a rumored trade target of the Yankees, looks filthy and the club needs to go get him before the August 2 MLB trade deadline.

New York may very well heed Carpenter's words, as right-hander Luis Severino was placed on the 15-day injured list with a lat injury. Meanwhile, the club is also looking to manage the innings of Nestor Cortes.

Adding a starter like Luis Castillo, who has pitched late into games for the Reds, would make too much sense for the Yankees.

Matt Carpenter certainly thinks so.
