Amazon MGM Studios heard the fervent pleas of Red White & Royal Blue's devoted fans by confirming a sequel, Deadline reported.

The movie, based on the bestselling novel of the same title released in 2019 by Casey McQuiston, was one of the top three most-watched romantic comedies of all time. Stars Nicholas Galitzine and Taylor Zakhar Perez will be returning to reprise their roles.

The film was director Matthew López's feature debut. He will also return to write the script for the sequel alongside author McQuiston. Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter of Berlanti Schechter Films will also be back to produce, along side the company's Michael McGrath as well as López. McQuiston is also set to executive produce.

The story follows Alex Claremont-Diaz (Zakhar Perez), son of the first female president of the US Ellen Claremont (Uma Thurman) and his long-running feud with the Prince Henry (Galitzine). Both young men are handsome and charismatic, which is why their shenanigans at Prince Henry's brother's wedding was such fodder for the tabloids.

Said shenanigans are fighting in public and having the £75,000 wedding cake fall on top of them. This has both the US government and The Firm's PR teams scrambling on how to save US/British diplomatic and trade relations caused by this very public snafu.

Sunshine of my heart…

The solution: some good, old-fashioned damage control. Alex sent back to the UK to play up a friendship with Prince Henry, complete with TV interviews and carefully staged photo-ops.

As they both spend time with and getting to know each other, they realize they're not so different after all. A real friendship quickly grows, and a surprise New Year's Eve kiss gets an intense and secret romance start blooming.

But the course of true love never did run smooth, especially for two men: one in the middle of his mother's re-election campaign and the other to a very strict and regimented royal family. The timezone-crossed lovers have to navigate interrupted confession on the lake, a prince's ghosting, an actual storming of a castle and institutionalized bigotry. Will love be enough to overcome all?

The sequel's plot details are still under wraps. The news of the sequel was announced during a Q&A session that followed the Culver Theater screeing.

When the host asked López, “So Matthew, is there gonna be a sequel? And are you working on anything?”

The director replied, “Yes, there's going to be a sequel.”

Whatever else he was going to say was drowned out by the screams of the attendees. Right after that announcement, the screen behind the RWRB team changed into a wedding cake with the number 2 as the topper and the words, “Fancy another slice?”

According to an Amazon spokesperson, the top-watched movie globally in its first three weeks also generated “a huge surge” in subscribers for Prime Video.

Galitzine's star is definitely on the rise. He was most recently in the hit Prime Video rom-com The Idea of You opposite Anne Hathaway. Before that, he also starred in the Starz historical drama Mary & George with Julianne Moore and Tony Curran.

Zakhar Perez, who starred in The Kissing Booth films and Minx, has been busy this year as well. He was an Ambassador at the recent SAG Awards. He's also been seen attending numerous fashion events.

What could the sequel be about?

While not much is known about the sequel, those who have read the book's collector's edition know that it has a bonus chapter written from Henry's point of view. The sequel could take elements from that. Or since López and McQuiston are co-writing the script, it could be a new story altogether.

Just days after the film was released, the fans have been inundating Amazon's social media pages with requests for a sequel. Weeks later, there were rumors that the author might be working on another novel, which could then be the basis of the sequel.

Whatever the plot may be, I'm here for it.
