The Carolina Panthers are set at the quarterback position with Cam Newton, but that didn't stop them from selecting a quarterback in this year's draft. Carolina drafted Will Grier with the 100th overall pick out of West Virginia.

At West Virginia, Grier aired it out a substantial amount as he played in the Big-12 Conference that is known for putting up massive point totals. In his three seasons in college, Grier threw for 8,556 yards, 81 touchdowns, and 23 interceptions.

The Panthers rookie quarterback is hoping to translate those numbers to the NFL in the future. While Newton may be the starter in the regular season, Grier will get plenty of time in the preseason to showcase his talent.

Currently, Grier is listed as the third quarterback on the depth chart. As of now, Grier is behind Kyle Allen but in front of Taylor Heinicke—who started in a game in 2018 for the Panthers.

Nonetheless, the Panthers selected Grier in the third round with the hope he could become a reliable backup to Newton. A successful display from Grier in the preseason could allow him to supplant Allen as the immediate backup to Newton.

Grier will get his first reps of the preseason when the Panthers take on the Chicago Bears. Here are three goals for Grier as he steps on the field in his preseason debut for the Panthers.

3. Showcase Knowledge of the Offense

If Grier ever hopes to earn his way up the depth chart, he's going to have to show Norv Turner that he knows the offense. The rookie quarterback will be able to show his knowledge of Carolina's offense when he suits up against the stingy Bears defense.

At West Virginia, Grier played in a simple offense that involved a ton of one or two-read plays in the passing game. That made things easy on Grier in college and playing in an NFL offense is a different monster.

Of course, Grier isn't going to know every aspect of the offense yet as he's only been with the team for a few months. This preseason game will allow Grier to get his first experience of running the offense in a live-speed game.

2. Throw a Touchdown

After the game concludes, Grier will want the highlights to involve him having an impressive performance. The preseason games are just exhibition games but getting started with a touchdown could provide a quarterback like Grier a boost of confidence.

The Panthers have a ton of question marks at wide receiver outside of D.J. Moore and Curtis Samuel. Therefore, Carolina likely throws the ball as much as possible to get a decent look at their wide receivers.

More passing attempts should lead to opportunities for Grier to toss a couple of touchdowns. To get things started, Grier should focus on getting his first touchdown pass under his belt. Then, the rest will come with time and reps.

1. Limit Mental Mistakes

For a quarterback, the first couple of series are vital to how the whole game could go. Limiting the mental mistakes, beginning with his first snap, will be crucial for Grier.

In college, Grier never had turnover issues, but that doesn't mean he won't in the NFL. The speed and schemes of NFL defenses are on a whole other level than the ones in the Big-12. There's a good chance he won't get into any 63-56 games as he did in college.

Coming into his first game, Grier will want to avoid throwing any interceptions or fumbling the ball. That goal may be tough as he faces a Chicago defense that led the NFL in turnovers forced in 2018.
