The Los Angeles Chargers are entering a new era in their franchise as they prepare to begin life after Philip Rivers. While it appears Tyrod Taylor will get the nod first, rookie Justin Herbert could find himself receiving meaningful snaps in 2020.

Herbert was selected by the Chargers with the No. 6 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft out of Oregon. Depending on how the quarterback position shakes out, Herbert could be a breakout player for Los Angeles next season.

However, as of this moment, it's tough to gauge how much playing time Herbert will get in his first year in Los Angeles. With Herbert's role being uncertain, let's take a look at three players that could potentially break out for the Chargers in the 2020 NFL season.

Chargers breakout candidates: Jerry Tillery

Last offseason, the Chargers used the No. 28 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft to take Jerry Tillery. Coming out of Notre Dame, Tillery dealt with a shoulder injury in his final collegiate season.

As a result, the stout interior defender required shoulder surgery to repair a torn labrum. Due to the surgery, Tillery was limited in the amount of work he can do with the Chargers during his first offseason.

Nevertheless, Tillery would start in three games for Los Angeles in 2019, tallying two sacks and three tackles for loss. In the event that he beats out Justin Jones for the starting defensive tackle spot, Tillery could thrive alongside veteran Linval Joseph in 2020.

Nasir Adderley

Following the selection of Tillery, the Chargers would take Nasir Adderley with the No. 60 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. Heading into training camp, Los Angeles was expecting Adderley to carve out a prominent role in the secondary from the get-go.

However, the rookie out of Delaware would sustain a hamstring in training camp that would linger throughout his rookie campaign. Adderley would only play in the first few weeks of the season before being sidelined after Week 4.

Similar to how colleges treat certain players, the Chargers treated Adderley's rookie season as a ‘redshirt year'. Now, with Adderley being healthy, he could form a dynamic safety duo with Derwin James.

Kenneth Murray

Of course, the Chargers began their 2020 NFL Draft class by taking Herbert with the No. 6 pick in the first round. Then, after seeing he was still available, Los Angeles would trade back into the first round to snatch Kenneth Murray with the No. 23 pick.

The Chargers are devoid of much consistency at inside linebacker, giving Murray a chance to start the moment he arrives in Los Angeles. The former Sooner is preparing himself to call plays in 2020, a responsibility that is typically given to a veteran.

Given his versatility at inside linebacker, the Chargers will want Murray on the field as much as possible. Taking that into consideration, Murray has a chance to be a standout first-rounder from the 2020 NFL Draft.
