The San Francisco 49ers made perhaps what will be the most significant deal heading toward Tuesday's NFL trade deadline. San Francisco acquired Jimmy Gar0ppolo from the New England Patriots and as a result, may have finally found their franchise quarterback.

Unfortunately for Brian Hoyer, the addition of Garoppolo resulted in the subtraction of his job in San Francisco. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the 49ers have officially parted ways with the veteran quarterback.

Ironically enough, the Patriots now have a position to fill behind superstar Tom Brady. The defending Super Bowl champions have traded both of their backup quarterbacks this season with the team sending Jacoby Brissett to the Indianapolis Colts earlier in the year and Garoppolo heading to San Francisco.

With the vacancy of the backup spot in New England, Bill Belichick and company will be on the lookout for a veteran to fill Garoppolo's shoes behind Brady. The Patriots currently only have one quarterback on the roster and with Brady now 40 years old, they'll need to bring in someone for insurance.

It'll be interesting to see how this trade pans out with Garoppolo finally getting his opportunity to be a long-term starter for a franchise desperately in need of an upgrade at the position. Not since Colin Kaepernick in his prime under Jim Harbaugh in San Francisco has the team had a real force to be reckoned with under center.

Although Garoppolo had some success filling in the suspended Brady last season, it remains to be seen whether he can continue to play at a high level in a new system on a team that has yet to win a game this season.
