The San Francisco 49ers are loaded at running back and they are hoping to get Jerick McKinnon back in time for next season. While the 49ers continue their offseason, GM John Lynch spoke about McKinnon's rehab process.

“I think there’s always that critical last juncture of a rehab where you go from running straight ahead and even trying to simulate some of the cutting that goes on at that position, specifically,” Lynch said, via Matt Maiocco of NBCSportsBayArea.com. “Then, you go play football and it becomes much more reactive. And that’s where he struggled. He’s continued to put in work. There are some positive signs that we’re on a better track.”

Back in 2018, McKinnon signed a four-year, $30 million deal with San Francisco after four seasons with the Minnesota Vikings. However, before he was able to make his debut for the 49ers, McKinnon suffered a devastating knee injury.

Last season, McKinnon sustained a setback to his ailing knee, missing two consecutive seasons with the 49ers. Nevertheless, San Francisco and Lynch reworked McKinnon's contract this offseason to keep him on the roster. Instead of moving on from him, the 49ers were able to restructure his deal, making it a one-year, $1.1 million contract in 2020.

After two straight seasons of being sidelined, McKinnon hopes to return to the football field next season. This time around, the former third-round pick is attempting to make sure he doesn't rush himself back.

At the least, according to Lynch, McKinnon is making positive progress in his recovery from a lingering knee injury.
