There had been plenty of speculation regarding quarterback San Francisco 49ers Jimmy Garoppolo's future following an underwhelming performance in last year's playoffs. It seems head coach Kyle Shanahan has since doubled down on Garoppolo's status as the long-term, franchise quarterback.

According to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports, Shanahan is optimistic about Garoppolo's potential as an all-time great:

“When you have to talk to Jimmy about one of the best quarterbacks of all time being available, I know Jimmy has a goal to be that,” the 49ers coach said Thursday in a conference call with reporters. “I know Jimmy. I believe Jimmy has the ability to be that and that's what both of us are going for. If we can get him there and he has the ability to do it, we're going to be pretty happy with who we have for a long time.”

This is certainly quite the vote of confidence coming from Shanahan. Although it comes after an offseason full of San Francisco's rumored interest in alternative option under center, it seems they are still confident that Garoppolo is the right man for the job.

Garoppolo has caught plenty of flak for his role as the game manager on a 49ers team that is led by its elite defense and prolific rushing attack. Regardless, he still finished in the top-5 Garoppolo ranked in the top five for completion percentage (69.1) and yards per attempt (8.4) before leading the 49ers to the Super Bowl in his first full season as a starter.

Garoppolo's efforts have not gone unnoticed by his 49ers teammates throughout the offseason. It is clear that Shanahan is also well aware of his capabilities.
