The San Francisco 49ers entered their opening game as the favorites against their division rival in the Arizona Cardinals. Despite the expectations heading into the season, the 49ers had another late-game letdown, reminiscent of their Super Bowl LIV loss back in February.

49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo came under fire again as he went 19-of-33 on attempted passes for a total of 259 passing yards. He also had a couple of crucial turnovers that ended their final offensive possession.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan voiced out his thoughts on their performance, specifically of his quarterback's:

“He had some good plays in there, but just like the entire offense, just missed a number of opportunities that it was going to take to win that game,” Shanahan said. “We had a couple there. He’s got to play better. We’ve all got to play better on offense especially. It starts with me.”

Notably sidelined due to injuries are sophomore wideout Deebo Samuel with a hamstring injury while rookie pass-catcher Brandon Aiyuk also nursed a foot injury. Wide receivers Richie James, Jalen Hurd, and Tavon Austin were all listed as inactives during the game.

The sidelined players forced the 49ers to play with shallow depth on its receiving corps mainly composed of Kendrick Bourne, Trent Taylor, and Dante Pettis. The three failed to leave an impact on the team's offense with them only seeing limited touches.

The 49ers will have to find ways to pull through as a unit and make things work in their upcoming games of the season.
