Nick Bosa is looking to build on his impressive rookie season with the San Francisco 49ers. However, an injury may prevent him from beginning the season healthy. After undergoing an MRI on his leg, Kyle Shanahan opened up about Bosa's injury.

“Glad he ended up getting that MRI because there was more to it. . . . Fortunately, we caught that and we were able to prevent him from hurting it worse,” Shanahan said, via David Lombardi of TheAthletic.com.

Before Tuesday's practice, Bosa noticed that his leg was sore and was planning to take the field with his teammates. Shanahan had other plans as he advised the second-year pass rusher to undergo tests on his injury.

Within the tests, it was discovered that Bosa suffered a muscle strain in his leg. Furthermore, Bosa is expected to be week-to-week, with Shanahan saying he hopes to have him back in time for Week 1.

Besides Bosa, the 49ers are eager to get rookie wideout Brandon Aiyuk back on the field before Week 1. Aiyuk sustained a hamstring injury over this past weekend and his timetable to return is unknown.

San Francisco's defense is looking to repeat their dominance from a season ago and Bosa is a crucial piece on the defensive front. As the team's first-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, Bosa accounted for nine sacks, 25 quarterback hits, and a forced fumble.

The reigning Defensive Rookie of the Year drew rave reviews from Trent Williams early in training camp. Seeing that it's fewer than three weeks until the 2020 season begins, Bosa's status for Week 1 is in jeopardy. The 49ers are scheduled to face the Arizona Cardinals in Week 1 on September 13.
