San Francisco 49ers rookie Trey Lance's first stint as the starting quarterback was a short-lived one. 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said Wednesday that Lance is unlikely to be able to play in Week 7 against the Indianapolis Colts, per The Athletic's David Lombardi, and Jimmy Garoppolo is expected to be back under center after missing the last game with a calf injury.

Garoppolo was the starter to begin the season, but he was mediocre before suffering his calf injury in Week 4. Lance replaced Garoppolo in that game and then started in Week 5. Unfortunately, the rookie suffered a knee injury and doesn't appear ready to play against the Colts on Sunday, even after the bye.

Shanahan may have gone back to a healthy Garoppolo anyway, but it looks like we'll have to wait and see what happens when both quarterbacks are available. Many 49ers fans have been clamoring for Nance to become the full-time starter because of Garoppolo's limitations. San Francisco also traded a ton to move up to No. 3 in order to draft Nance, so fans want to see the reins fully turned over to the quarterback of the future.

The 49ers are 2-3 on the season.
