The San Francisco 49ers have had one of the most intriguing quarterback situations this NFL season. The team has yet to move on from incumbent starter Jimmy Garoppolo despite drafting Trey Lance with the third overall pick.

Based on the report from NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the 49ers are holding firm on their stance, regardless of how well Trey Lance performs in his first big league start. The rookie QB will take the reins as Garoppolo nurses a calf injury for their matchup against the undefeated Arizona Cardinals.

Via Rapoport:

“San Francisco has been very clear not just this week, but really ever since Trey Lance was drafted number three when the 49ers traded all the way up – this is Jimmy Garoppolo's job. Trey Lance is not, from what I understand, expected to hold on to the job regardless of what happens today. If Jimmy Garoppolo is healthy next week, it is going to be his job. That is something that Kyle Shanahan has been consistent about. Trey Lance cannot win the job today.”

But despite the fact that Lance can do little to change his fate, Kyle Shanahan was still effusive in his anticipation for the rookie's maiden start.

“I’m excited to see him play,” Shanahan said of the 49ers’ rookie QB, per NBC Sports. “I know he’s got the ability to do a lot of things. But it’s going to be his first time out there for the whole game, and I’m just pumped to see him play, but I don’t go into it expecting anything.”

The San Francisco 49ers see their future with Trey Lance. After spending all that draft capital to move up, it wouldn't make sense otherwise. But barring a massive change of heart, the present still belongs to Jimmy Garoppolo.
