The San Francisco 49ers made sure the big fella at offensive tackle didn't end up anywhere else, as they forked over a substantial amount of money to retain Trent Williams in free agency. The move keeps the most important piece on the 49ers offensive line in the Bay Area for the long haul.

As noted by ESPN's Dianna Russini, the deal makes Williams the highest paid linemen in the NFL, at age 32. Of the $138 million, $55.1 million is guaranteed and Williams will receive $30.1 million for signing on the dotted line.

It's the first big move of the offseason for the 49ers who are looking to bounce back in 2021.

After claiming the NFC crown in 2019, it was a 2020 riddled with injuries for Kyle Shanahan's squad in San Francisco, as they finished 6-10 in the NFC West.

Trent Williams is coming off a solid 2020 season that resulted in another pro-bowl nod, after missing all of 2019 while having a contract dispute with the Washington Football Team.

Via Adam Schefter, the Chicago Bears and Kansas City Chiefs had also had dialogue with Williams about working out a deal before he decided to accept the lucrative deal from the 49ers.

San Francisco acquired Trent Williams last April for two draft picks, including a 2020 fifth-round selection and a 2021 third round-selection. The deal assures the 49ers that the move will not be a rental and provides stability at the offensive line.

Whoever plays quarterback this year for the 49ers, whether it's Jimmy Garoppolo or somebody else, will have one of the best tackles in the game protecting them.
