Trey Lance will be making his first start for the San Francisco 49ers in Week 5 against the Arizona Cardinals, and head coach Kyle Shanahan couldn't be any more pumped up for the rookie.

While there are a lot of frustrations surrounding the franchise after starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo went down with a calf injury, all hope is not lost with the presence of Lance, the no. 3 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Naturally, Shanahan has decent expectations in the first NFL start of the young signal-caller, but he believes Lance has all the tools to dominate and make a difference for the 49ers.

“I'm excited to see him play,” Shanahan said of the 49ers' rookie QB, per NBC Sports. “I know he's got the ability to do a lot of things. But it's going to be his first time out there for the whole game, and I'm just pumped to see him play, but I don't go into it expecting anything. You try to prepare a guy as good as you can. From our standpoint, I know he's done his part in preparing. And then when Sunday comes, that's usually the spot where you get to have fun and just cut it loose, and you live with the results.”

Trey Lance has already proven he can be impactful for the 49ers when he took over for the injured Jimmy Garoppolo midway through their Week 4 game against the Seattle Seahawks. He completed nine of his 18 passes for 157 yards and two touchdowns, albeit in a losing effort.

Of course Lance will be tested more in Week 5 as he faces Kyler Murray and his undefeated Cardinals. Murray is currently the odds-on favorite to win the MVP award this year, so playing him is the ultimate trial for Lance.
