As if the rumors weren't already swirling for the San Francisco 49ers and the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, things just took another turn as the chaos continues on. The 49ers offseason really took a swing when they decided to trade up in a major way to acquire the No. 3 pick in the NFL Draft. It sent things into motion and indicated that the franchise does not have the faith in Jimmy Garoppolo they once had. It became very apparent they would select a quarterback at No. 3, but who? It seems to be down to two candidates, and the 49ers seem split on the decision.

Ahh, the ever anticipated battle of head coach against the front office to decide who the future of the franchise will be. A tale as old as time. There had been rumors just a couple weeks back that the 49ers decision may come down to Justin Fields and Mac Jones, but now it appears to be a two-prospect race between Jones and Trey Lance.

Mac Jones has seen his draft stock skyrocket after his impressive 2020 season. At Alabama, Jones showed the pocket presence and arm talent that raised eyebrows throughout the nation as many didn't have him pegged to be a no doubt, first-round selection. He has leapfrogged right into that status and right into the thoughts of Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers.

Trey Lance has been thought of as a top quarterback prospect in this 2021 NFL Draft for about a year now. With Covid-19 derailing the FCS football schedule, Lance opted out of North Dakota State's season once it kicked off this past spring. Even without much recent tape to go off of, scouts and teams know what they see in Lance and it's the potential to be a franchise quarterback for the next decade plus.

One thing is almost a certainty, the 49ers will select a quarterback at No. 3 in the NFL Draft. The mystery remains whether it will be Mac Jones or Trey Lance.
