Shohei Ohtani has a penchant for making the spectacular feel ordinary. But the Los Angeles Angels two-way star definitely turned a few heads on Thursday as he put on a performance at Fenway Park that would make Babe Ruth proud.

Ohtani put up the most strikes and highest strike percentage of any pitcher in a single game this season. The Angels starter also induced 29 swings and misses, another high mark for any pitcher in the association. He tallied 11 strikeouts while also connecting on two singles off the wall and one RBI.

“I hope you don’t start taking that for granted. Like it’s old hat,” Angels manager Joe Maddon said of Ohtani’s skills. “It’s just so unusual. It’s otherworldly, on this level of this game.”

Otherworldly is right. Shohei Ohtani was also the first pitcher to be in the first four of the batting order at Fenway Park since Babe Ruth did all the way back in 1919.

Speaking to Ohtani, however, would make you think he was just your ordinary pitcher throwing his first game at Fenway Park.

“It’s one of my favorite ballparks,” said Ohtani, who has batted .302 with two homers in 10 games at Fenway. “I was looking forward to pitching here.”

“To be honest, I was pretty fatigued,” the Angels pitcher continued. “My body was pretty tired. I tried to get to sleep as early as possible and get enough sleep and rest. I think I was able to do that.”

If that was a fatigued Shohei Ohtani, a well-rested one should terrify Red Sox fans by the next time the Angels come to town once more.
