Barbie is set to stream on Max on Dec. 15 and an American Sign Language version will also be available, Variety reported.

Greta Gerwig's film on the worldwide iconic doll earned more than $1.4 billion globally. It is currently the highest-grossing movie of 2023, and it is also the highest-grossing Warner Bros. movie in the studio's history.

The film follows Stereotypical Barbie (Margot Robbie), with Ken (Ryan Gosling) joining her in discovering the world outside Barbieland. There she meets Mattel executives and ends up having to face the realities of what it's like to be a woman. America Ferrera, Issa Rae, Kate McKinnon, Michael Cera, Simu Liu and Will Ferrell joined the stellar cast.

Barbie and (the) Oscar

Barbie also dominated the music charts with Dua Lipa's Dance the Night, Billie Eilish's What Was I Made For and Gosling's I'm Just Ken. All three songs are up for an Academy Award nomination.

Robbie produced Barbie through her company Lucky Chap. She approached Gerwig to write the script, as well as direct it. Gerwig, in turn, brought in Noah Baumback to co-write the film with her.

Barbie is Gerwig's first big-budget production, and with that came nerves. In a recent panel, she said, “It was a risk for the studio to make it and for Mattel to make it. And it’s also, as a ‘lady director' and a lady thing and it’s a big risk for a lady — in that context, I wanted it to work because I wanted to maybe make it easier for whatever the next thing is.”

As for the film's cult following, it was completely unexpected for both the cast and crew. Gerwig told Variety's Awards Circuit Podcast, “Nobody told anyone to wear pink. It just happened on its own. I think it corresponded with some need. People had to be together and experience something communally.”

The ASL feature performed by Leila Hanaumi received feedback from the Deaf community and counsel from community leaders. It will be found as a unique title in-app, identifiable by its sign language symbol key art.

Barbie will start streaming on Max on Dec. 15.
