Frenkie de Jong has confirmed that he aspires to remain with Barcelona for “many more years.”

The Dutch international took some time to speak to The Guardian ahead of Barca’s upcoming La Liga fixture against Valencia, where he opened up about his hopes to stay put at the Catalan side.

“I’m very happy I’m at Barcelona: from a young age I’ve wanted to be here, so in that way it has been a dream come true,” de Jong said. “But I would have liked to win more trophies than we did in my first two years. I expected more in that sense. Let’s put it that way. But other than that, I’m very happy here and hopefully for many more years.”

In the big picture, de Jong has been the subject of a multitude of transfer rumors since the recent summer transfer window. While the Dutch talent does have four years remaining on his current contract deal with the club, much has been centered on his roller-coaster play over the ongoing campaign, coupled with the emergence of the side's promising midfielders in Gavi and Nico Gonzalez.

For one, ahead of the recent winter transfer window, Premier League side Manchester City was linked with a move for de Jong, although it remains to be seen whether the reigning England top flight champions plan to make a push to sign him later this year in the summer window. On the other hand, the likes of Bayern Munich and Liverpool have also been in the rumor mill for the Dutchman as well.

Nonetheless, a report in December noted that for Barca manager Xavi Hernandez, de Jong is “absolutely non-transferable.”

More so, Xavi doubled down on his confidence in de Jong during a press conference ahead of Barca’s away league encounter with Valencia.

“For me, Frenkie is a great player,” Xavi said. “I think he's taken a step forward since we arrived. He's a different player, more dynamic… He had some discomfort in his calf which didn't allow him to play well in the Supercopa against Real Madrid. Now he looks comfortable, he isn't losing the ball, he's helping in defense, he's getting into the box, he's scoring goals. He's a player to be at Barca for many years.

“[De Jong] is happy here. There are a lot of games, and we'll have to rotate in midfield as it's very demanding physically but he's important. He's playing at a very good level. He's very demanding on himself. He's a great professional and he will keep improving.”

Barca is in the midst of quite a roller-coaster season, which de Jong recently characterized as a “failure” due to the club's notable underachievements in multiple competitions.

“I think that this current season is already a failure,” de Jong said. “We’re already out of the Champions League, the cup, and we’re 14 points [15 points] away from Real Madrid.”

Overall, Barcelona is currently aiming to finish in the top-four of the final La Liga standings and has its sights set on winning the Europa League competition for the first time in club history. The Catalan side capped off the first leg of its Europa League playoff tie against Napoli with a 1-1 draw result, which included a penalty goal by Ferran Torres. The two sides will meet in the return leg this Thursday.
