Barcelona is expected to be very busy this summer as they look to overhaul the squad and restore their former glory. It was a significant down year for the Catalan side in 2021-22, following the departure of club icon Lionel Messi, and now president Joan Laporta has made some eye-opening comments regarding a potential reunion. Laporta spoke fondly about the idea of reuniting with the former Barca superstar, via Fabrizio Romano.

When asked if he'd like Messi to return to Barca, Laporta said, “Yes, of course I'd like it.”

Whether or not this means Barca has any realistic shot at staging a push for Messi's return this summer remains to be seen, but it's certainly interesting to see the team would welcome him back with open arms. His exit from the club was controversial due to the financial restraints placed on the club which prevented them from re-signing the superstar Argentinian. He joined PSG on a free transfer, but perhaps a return back to La Liga could be in the works.

While he didn't have a bad year by any means, he wasn't the usual Lionel Messi fans have come to expect during his debut season in Paris. Messi scored just 6 goals in Ligue 1 this season, assisting 13 as Paris easily claimed the league title. It was the first season since 2005 that Messi didn't record double-digit goals, and it was a dramatic falloff from the 30 goals he scored just last year for Barcelona.

Laporta's comments will certainly get the minds of Barca fans racing as they envision a potential return of the club legend to Camp Nou.
