The Chicago Bears and Cordarrelle Patterson have agreed to a two-year deal worth $5 million per season, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Although Patterson is listed as a receiver, he was often used in the backfield with the New England Patriots last season.

In 2018, Patterson played in 15 games and started five. He had 21 receptions, 247 receiving yards, and two receiving touchdowns. As a runner, he carried the ball 42 times for 228 rushing yards and one touchdown.

He has never been a reliable receiver in his career but has always been a dynamic return specialist. With Jordan Howard on the trade block, it is possible that the Bears will make Patterson a primary backup to Tarik Cohen.

The Bears already have Allen Robinson, Taylor Gabriel, and second-year receiver Anthony Miller. The addition of Cordarrelle Patterson certainly adds more speed and size to the position. He's a good depth player as either a receiver or a running back.

Given the innovative play-calling of coach Matt Nagy, it will be interesting to see how the versatile receiver can do. Entering his seventh season in the NFL, Patterson has 184 catches for 1,872 yards and 10 touchdowns in his career. Whether on jet sweeps or possibly in wildcat formations, Patterson will have a big role on the team.

He would certainly take a load off Cohen as a return specialist. This will allow both Cohen and Patterson to be used interchangeably to help them stay fresh and play faster for longer periods of time.

The 27-year-old Patterson could be the player who takes the Chicago Bears over the top and into the Super Bowl.
