Mitchell Trubisky was taken by the Chicago Bears with the second overall pick of the 2017 NFL Draft. Eight spots ahead of Patrick Mahomes. Ten spots ahead of Deshaun Watson. To make matters worse, the Bears traded up just to take Trubisky.

Obviously, that decision has not panned out well for Chicago, as Mahomes already has an MVP award and a Super Bowl championship under his belt in Kansas City and Watson is a Pro Bowler in Houston.

As a result, the University of North Carolina product will never escape the Mahomes and Watson comparisons, and Bears head coach Matt Nagy understands that, likening Trubisky's situation to that of Alex Smith:

“What I would say with Alex, here’s a No. 1 pick in the NFL draft, he’s being compared to Aaron Rodgers his whole career,” said Nagy, according to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated. “Same thing, it’s never gonna leave Mitchell, being compared to Patrick and Deshaun.”

To be fair, Trubisky as considered by many to be the best quarterback prospect in the 2017 draft class, and there were legitimate questions about both Mahomes and Watson at the time.

I don't think anyone expected Mahomes to throw 50 touchdowns as soon as his second season, so to play armchair general manager with 20/20 hindsight at this point should elicit some eye rolls.

But that doesn't change what has happened. Mahomes has already entered all-time great discussions, and Watson is one of the best quarterbacks in the league.

Meanwhile, Trubisky is battling with Nick Foles for his starting job in the Windy City.

Sports are cruel sometimes.
