Pro Football Talk reports that the Chicago Bears tight end Trey Burton suffered a surprising groin injury ahead of their playoff matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles. Burton was officially added to their injury report late Saturday night before the game.

It is not immediately known how the injury occurred, but Burton said that he noticed the issue last Friday. After a full practice the injury got worse overnight. Saturday morning he felt things were “completely locked up.” He tried to loosen it up but was unsuccessful.

From the Chicago Tribune's Dan Wiederer:

“I let my team down. I hate it,” Burton said. “Especially going against one of my former teams. Playoff game. All the implications. It was tough.”

“I thought I was fine,” he said. “I thought I’d be able to push through it. Didn’t get any treatment. I thought I was good. And then I went to sleep Friday night, woke up and it was completely locked.”

The Bears lost to the Eagles 16-15 on a missed field-goal attempt by kicker Cody Parkey, ending the team's playoff run quickly after a 12-4 regular season.

Burton has talked about his issues with anxiety in the past, specifically in December he spoke about staying up all night thinking about a play. He was supposed to throw a pass, a version of the “Philly Special”. This time, he felt he was in “a really good spot” mentally. He considers this injury to be purely physical.

In his first season with the Bears, Burton hauled in 54 receptions for 569 yards and six touchdowns. He previously played for the Philadelphia Eagles from 2014-2017, winning a Super Bowl last year.
