Since the start of the offseason, there has been plenty of movement across the league involving the quarterback position. It has seen the several notable names get new landing spots ahead of the 2018 campaign.

Among the teams impacted by those moves were Cincinnati Bengals, who saw backup QB AJ McCarron decide to join the Buffalo Bills on a two-year deal in free agency. However, the Bengals appear to have quickly found his replacement with the signing of fifth-year quarterback Matt Barkley to a two-year contract, according to Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com.

Since entering the league as a fourth-round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, Barkley has bounced around the league with a few teams having played for the Philadelphia Eagles, Chicago Bears, San Francisco 49ers, and Arizona Cardinals. He has played sparingly over that span taking the field in 11 career games where he has thrown for 1,911 yards on 59.8 percent completion rate with eight touchdown passes to 18 interceptions while holding a 63.7 passer rating and fumbling five times.

Barkley hasn't seen the field in the regular season since the 2016 campaign with the Bears, where struggled in seven games played throwing for 1,611 yards on 59.7 percent completion rate with eight touchdowns to 14 interceptions while holding a meager 68.3 passer rating. The 27-year-old has struggled to demonstrate that he could be a viable starting quarterback in the NFL up to this point in time.

Barkley put together a promising four-year collegiate career at USC, but that hasn't translated to any type of success in the NFL. Rather, he has instead become a journeyman quarterback around the league that is best suited as a backup on a roster. Barkley will have that role behind Andy Dalton over the next few seasons and could step in for spot starts if needed due to injury. If anything, this move brings more depth and stability under center for the Bengals next season and possibly beyond that.
