Rookie quarterbacks sometimes have a tough time adjusting to the NFL and reading defenses. The Cincinnati Bengals seem to be satisfied with the strides that rookie Ryan Finley has made in training camp.

Per Paul Dehner Jr. in The Athletic:

“From our perspective, (Finley’s) been making the improvements that you would expect to see from a rookie quarterback,” head coach Zac Taylor said. “He did a great job in college and was really well-coached. That doesn’t necessarily mean he’s done a lot of the things we ask him to do. Sometimes when you’re doing it for the first time, it’s a foreign language. If he’d never run that concept before, he can’t look back at the reps he’s banked in the past while running this concept, so he doesn’t have that all the time. You just need him to get the reps. He gets up there in the first couple practices on third downs, and there’s eight guys on the line of scrimmage. Guys just need the experience.”

The Bengals selected Finley with their fourth-round pick in this year's draft out of NC State. With the Wolfpack, Finley threw for 10,501 yards, 60 touchdowns, and 25 interceptions in his three seasons.

This year, Finley is likely to land as the team's third-string quarterback with Andy Dalton and Jeff Driskel ahead of him. As a rookie, Cincinnati isn't expecting to rely on him this season but rather develop him for the future.

For rookie passers, it can be tough to get acclimated into an NFL system. Especially one that uses concepts that weren't used at the college you attended.
