The Dallas Wings enjoyed a strong 2023 season but fell short in the WNBA playoffs. Dallas features an exciting team heading into the 2024 campaign, though. Wings star Satou Sabally is confident that Dallas can take a step forward during the upcoming season.

“Obviously (the 2023 season) didn't end how we want, but I think our team was just so good,” Sabally said during a recent interview, via the Dallas Wings' X (formerly Twitter) account. “Obviously we didn't peak at the end but now we know what it takes to peak… That is the goal for the future and I'm super excited about that.”

Sabally, 26, was drafted by the Wings and made her WNBA debut in 2020. She has already made two All-Star teams through the first four years of her career. 2023 was her true breakout season, however.

Sabally averaged career-highs in points per game (18.6), rebounds per game (8.1), assists per game (4.4), steals per game (1.8), field goal percentage (43.5%) and three-point percentage (36.1%). She was ultimately selected to her second All-Star team and finished fifth in WNBA MVP voting. Additionally, Sabally earned the Most Improved Player of the Year Award.

Sabally also addressed her impressive individual 2023 performance with the Wings.

“I would say just keep going, play these games super hard, I think I was really proud of how hard I played every single game,” Sabally said. “I didn't take one single game lightly.”

Sabally is becoming a superstar in the city of Dallas. She's enjoyed playing for the Wings so far during her career.

“They're so fun,” Sabally said of the Wings fanbase. “I'm being called Miss Unicorn on the streets, like that's so cute. And the fanbase has just showed so much love and support. Obviously our organization has just been growing so much… It's fun to see, you know, when I come into the office how everything has changed. We have these sit-downs, we can talk about our career.

“Everything has just been really great in terms of support and love. You can really feel that as a player. That's also the environment that you want to put yourself into.”

It should be remembered that Sabally underwent surgery on her shoulder during the offseason. As a result, she will not be ready to play in 2024 until around August.

The Wings still feature enough talent to compete during the first half of the season despite Sabally's absence. After all, there is a reason Sabally is confident in this team.

Dallas Wings' 2024 outlook

Dallas selected Jacy Sheldon from Ohio State with the N0. 5 overall pick in the WNBA Draft. Sheldon could play a big role in 2024.

Arike Ogunbowale will lead the way, though. Ogunbowale is one of the most prolific scorers in the entire league.

Overall, the Wings feature a fairly balanced roster that should be able to make noise throughout the upcoming campaign. If they can remain in contention while Sabally is out, Dallas may have a legitimate opportunity to make a deep playoff run once she returns.
