The New York Giants' feel-good offseason is dissipating. Brian Flores singled them out as one of the teams that engaged in dishonest hiring practices in his lawsuit. New York is being alleged of interviewing Flores after deciding they would already hire Brain Daboll as head coach.

Regardless of the outcome of Flores' lawsuit, the Giants have lots of work to do with their roster. Every single area of the team needs work. Five straight losing seasons have left the Giants with only a handful of meaningful players. With the fifth and seventh overall selections in the 2022 NFL Draft, the Giants have the potential to add players that will play big parts in their playoff hunt.

New general manager Joe Schoen has a lot of pieces to pick up in New York. One area, in particular, would be a great place to start.

Biggest need for the Giants in the 2022 NFL offseason

Aside from making a move for Aaron Rodgers or Russell Wilson, there isn't any path for the Giants to make the playoffs next season. The most useful thing they can do is build a foundation for the future. The best area to start laying a foundation is on the offensive line.

Andrew Thomas is the only genuine keeper the Giants have on their offensive line. The 23-year-old bounced back from an iffy rookie campaign to become a surefire blindside blocker. One spot down, four to go.

The draft offers New York the chance to add another solidified piece to their line. Offensive tackles Evan Neal, Charles Cross and Ikem Ekwonu would all be worthy of one of the Giants' top draft picks. Big Blue should use the middle rounds of the draft to find prospects for their interior lineman spots.

Free agency offers fixes for the Giants offensive line as well. The team's tricky cap situation makes it unlikely that they will sign a top-notch lineman such as tackle Terron Armstead, center Ryan Jensen or guard Brandon Scherff, though. It's also uncertain if any top players want to join a woeful team. Still, if Schoen can find ways to shed enough salary to go looking for big free agents, he should go shopping for the best names on the offensive lineman market.

The offensive line is the best place for New York to start because they will need a strong presence there regardless of how they build the offense.

Schoen and Daboll have said they want to build around Daniel Jones. He has not yet had the benefit of having a strong offensive line to help him prove he can be the guy. Will a good line allow him to show he's a diamond in the rough? It's doubtful, but at least he will seemingly be able to show more of his abilities.

If Jones blows his chance to firmly become the Giants' long-time starter then whoever New York brings will need to be protected. New York could go big-fish hunting or make a move for a quarterback in the 2023 draft. The hopeful improvement over Jones will greatly benefit from proper protection.

The Giants still have Saquon Barkley. He didn't look like the rocket-powered force that he did at the beginning of his career, largely due to suffering injury after injury. Getting him better blocking could be a key to getting him right again.

Schoen explained after he was introduced as the Giants GM that the offensive line is extremely important. He stressed that the way to improve the unit is simply to get better players into it. That should be priority numbers one and two for the Giants this offseason and every other one until they build a good unit.
