The Buffalo Bills were dealt a major blow with rookie quarterback Josh Allen suffering an elbow injury during last Sunday's 20-13 loss to the Houston Texans that will keep him out of the mix for the next few weeks.

However, Allen has taken the optimistic approach with the situation as views it as a chance for him to take a step back and learn from the sidelines from a veteran quarterback in Derek Anderson.

Prior to the injury, Allen had been struggling to find any level of consistency in his play as he had failed to notch more than 200 passing yards since Week 2 against the Los Angeles Chargers. Since then, he had thrown three interceptions to a touchdown while garnering fewer than five per pass attempt in each of the last three games. He had hit a bump in his progression that had led to him having difficulty throwing the ball down the field effectively while his completion rate had dipped 54.0 percent on the season.

Things were beginning to take a more brutal turn for him throwing the ball as the Bills have struggled as a unit offensively ranking last in the league with both 12.7 points per game and in passing. This injury now puts him on the sideline to see what goes into finding success on the field and the habits that a quarterback must take. Prior to Anderson's arrival, it had been a couple of young unproven players at the position that he was learning from in Nathan Peterman and A.J. McCarron.

The 35-year-old has been around the league for quite some time that saw him previously have some success with the Cleveland Browns early in his career and work with many different quarterbacks over the years such as former league MVP Cam Newton. There is plenty that Anderson could offer Allen off the field that could help his growth along toward him becoming the franchise cornerstone player that the Bills are hoping he will turn out to be.
