The Denver Broncos have made some huge changes this offseason. Moving on from QB Russell Wilson was the biggest change that impacted a lot of the Broncos' other roster moves. However, Denver has been doing more than simply adding players to the roster. The team recently signed a former Stanford coach to an important front office role.

According to NFL insider Adam Schefter, the Broncos have hired former Stanford head coach David Shaw, per Mike Klis. Shaw expressed a desire to return to the NFL after stepping down from Stanford. Shaw and Broncos head coach Sean Payton worked together as offensive assistants in Philadelphia in 1997.

David Shaw was one of the most well-respected college coaches during his tenure at Stanford. He was the head coach from 2011-22. Shaw became the winningest coach in Stanford history after the 2022 season. He reportedly interviewed for vacant head coaching jobs with both the Titans and Chargers after expressing an interest in returning to the NFL.

Shaw will be a senior personnel executive under general manager George Paton.

This is not the only front office move that Paton has made this offseason. Paton also hired Cody Rager as VP of Player Personnel in January. Rager spent nine years in the New Orleans Saints' scouting department. He began as a regional scout before being promoted to assistant college scouting director in 2021.

Shaw brings 25 years of experience to the Broncos front office, where he will help them revive the franchise. Denver has the NFL's second-longest playoff drought at eight years. Hopefully that drought ends sooner rather than later.

Opinions are mixed about Broncos rookie QB Bo Nix

Bo Nix is one of the most important figures in the future of the Denver Broncos.

Denver selected Nix with the 12th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. He is intended to become the next franchise QB for the Broncos. However, opinions are mixed on Bo Nix at this point in the offseason.

The majority opinion is excitement around the upside that Bo Nix brings to the team.

Dan Lanning, Nix's head coach at Oregon, praised the QB's large appetite for film study. “There's nobody who's going to step on the field more prepared than Bo,” Lanning told Colin Cowherd.

Broncos wide receiver Courtland Sutton has gone on the record about his excitement about Bo Nix.

“Bo brings a lot of really good qualities to our team in terms of the quarterback position. He does a lot of things really, really well on the field. He has that leader mentality, that aura that he walks with,” Sutton told Zac Stevens of theDenvr.com earlier this offseason.

However, Nix is not without his skeptics.

Former Broncos cornerback Chris Harris Jr. falls into that camp. He is reportedly skeptical of the pairing of Bo Nix and Sean Payton in Denver.

“I mean he’s the best guy out there,” Harris Jr. said about Sean Payton. “He’s supposed to be the quarterback guru and I think I can only, I don’t know that many quarterbacks he’s actually guru’d though. Only one I can remember is Drew Brees so far, maybe you have a little more history on that.”

Nix should receive plenty of work during training camp and the preseason. It will be interesting to see how he compares to last year's backup QB Jarrett Stidham.
