Revenge memes flooded X as Team India captain Rohit Sharma knocked out the mighty Australia from the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Rohit Sharma tore into Australia, scripting a plethora of records en route to his sensational innings of 92 off 41 balls to power the Men in Blue to victory at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in St Lucia.

After Australia won the toss and elected to field first, Rohit Sharma came out all guns blazing despite the loss of his opening partner Virat Kohli for a duck in the second over of the Indian innings.

Showing aggression from the word go, Rohit Sharma took on Australia's world-class pace battery, especially Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins, to guide India to a mammoth total of 205/5 in their allocated 20 overs.

Such was Rohit Sharma's assault on Mitchell Starc that he clobbered him for four sixes and a boundary, taking 29 runs from his single over. It left Pat Cummins scratching his head while Mitchell Starc had a feared look on his face.

During the course of his knock, which included seven fours and eight sixes, Rohit Sharma became the first cricketer to smash over 200 maximums in the 20-over format.

Besides, he went past his Team India teammate Virat Kohli and Pakistan skipper Babar Azam to become the leading scorer in T20Is.

After his 92-run innings, the “Hitman” has 4165 runs in T20Is while Babar Azam has 4145. The out-of-form Virat Kohli occupies the third spot in the list with 4103 runs.

In addition, Rohit Sharma's fifty against Australia came in 19 balls, which is the quickest by a skipper in the history of the T20 World Cup.

Previously, this record was held by Bangladesh's Mohammad Ashraful, who scored a half-century in 20 deliveries against the West Indies in the 2007 edition of the tournament.

Following Rohit Sharma's match-winning performance, a mesmerized Sunil Gavaskar and Aakash Chopra heaped rich praise on the Team India captain, emphasizing that on his day, the Nagpur-born cricketer can destroy any bowler in the world, like he demolished Australian pace spearhead Mitchell Starc in the Super Eight clash.

“What an innings this was. Some of the shots were just incredible. Jaw-dropping shots! The slog sweep off Pat Cummins of his first delivery went almost 100 metres. Then those inside-out extra cover drives off Mitchell Starc. It was so sweet. He is one of the sweetest timers of the ball. He's got so much of style. Style and strength going together – make up for a heavy combination. And that's what we saw from him today,” Sunil Gavaskar told Star Sports.

“Yes, we all have been starved of that (knock) for a while. But then again, it's just the intent to get the Indian team off to a great start. Today, he almost got a hundred. Again, he was not looking to tuck the bowler out for a 100. He was looking to play his shot. He is totally team-oriented, and that's why every time he is successful, everybody enjoys it,” he added.

“Just thinking, he got out to a left-hander again. Are we gonna do another segment about his weakness? He got out to a left-hander no? So, another segment next time,” the former batting stalwart asked.

On the other hand, Aakash Chopra stated that not just the Indian cricket team but the whole country believed in Rohit Sharma's abilities, and his knock against Australia would have brought joy to the lives of 1.3 billion Indians.

“We believe in karma, we believe in Sharma. Sharma ji's son did an incredible job and caused merriment. He hit incomparable sixes. How well the boy plays and he showed that when he plays, only he plays. He gave the Indian team a rocket-like start and showed the path to go beyond 200,” Aakash Chopra said on his YouTube channel.

“The job Rohit Sharma started doing – unbelievable. The 29 runs he hit off a Mitchell Starc over, which included four sixes, the sixes he is hitting over cover – how? When Rohit Sharma plays, he plays differently,” the cricketer-turned-commentator observed.

“The best of Rohit Sharma vs the best of anyone in the world, there is a difference. His consistency graph might not be as good as compared to the best in the world right now but when he plays, he plays incredibly well. No one has hit more sixes than him. He has only hit the most sixes against this team,” Aakash Chopra explained.

“He had reached 92 and was on the verge of the fastest hundred. There was a time when the team had scored 41 and he had scored 40. Kohli had gotten out and Rishabh Pant had scored only one, but this guy was playing with a different force. He batted amazingly well and made India capable of progressing,” he signed off.
