The Denver Broncos were reportedly pegged as one of the teams potentially interested in acquiring left tackle Trent Williams from the Washington Redskins. However, it seems no such efforts were ever made.

General manager John Elway has acknowledged that the Broncos needed to get better up front, particularly at left tackle. Regardless, Elway says that they did not reach out to Washington, via Jon Heath of the Broncos Wire:

“No, we did not talk to them,” Elway said. “We had heard what was going on, but we also had heard what the compensation was.

Elway mentioned that while several teams were interested, he did not think the Broncos would get much bang for their buck.

“I think Tampa was in on it, Cleveland, several other teams were in on it, but where the compensation was, we didn’t feel like it was something that we wanted to get involved in.”

It is no secret that Denver wanted to shore up some more help for quarterback Drew Lock heading into his second year. Lock struggled to find his footing as a rookie after being named the starter down the final stretch of the 2019 campaign. As a result, they put an emphasis on shoring up more firepower through free agency and the 2020 NFL Draft.

Denver made a splash by forming a one-two punch in the backfield with the addition of running back Melvin Gordon. They followed it up by using their first two picks in the 2020 NFL Draft to take wide receivers Jerry Jeudy and KJ Hamler.

Although Lock may have more than enough weapons at his disposal, there is still plenty of speculation regarding his protection along the offensive line. As a result, Garett Bolles and Elijah Wilkinson will be battling it out for the starting left tackle job. Meanwhile, the San Francisco 49ers got one of the league's elite left tackles in Williams for a fifth-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft and a third-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.
