The Denver Broncos turned the quarterback reins over to rookie Drew Lock late this past season, and given the success Lock had in his five starts, the Broncos will certainly be starting him from Day 1 in 2020.

As a result, Joe Flacco's future in Denver is murky, and new offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur does not know what will become of Flacco heading into next season.

“I don’t know and I wouldn’t get into that in this setting,” said Shurmur, according to Nicki Jhabvala of The Athletic. “Again, I’m just getting to know the players, the ones that were here a year ago and I’m not sure who’s going to be here moving forward. I think he’s had an outstanding career. I thought he did a lot of good things last year. Unfortunately, he was injured and couldn’t finish the season.”

Flacco was knocked out midway through the 2019 campaign due to a herniated disc in his neck and may have to undergo offseason surgery to repair the issue.

The problem for the Broncos is that the veteran is due to make $20.25 million in salary next year and comes with a cap hit of $23.65 million, which is certainly a hefty price to pay for a backup who may not even be fully healthy.

If Denver opts to cut Flacco, it would leave the club with $13.6 million in dead money.

In eight games in 2019, the 35-year-old threw for 1,822 yards, six touchdowns, and five interceptions while completing 65.3 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 85.1.
