Days after the Denver Broncos lost their season-opener against the Tennessee Titans, head coach Vic Fangio is refuting his original statements regarding his decision to not call a timeout late in the game.

“I should have called timeout there,” Fangio said during his Zoom conference call on Tuesday (per USA Today).

It was a close end-to-end matchup between these two AFC teams, which the Titans ultimately won, 16-14. Melvin Gordon III put the Broncos up early in the fourth quarter and Denver seemed to have complete control of the game. But the Titans offense had other plans and continued to breathe on the necks of the Broncos defensive line.

With under two minutes left to play, Titans star running back Derrick Henry completed a 13-yard rush towards the Denver red zone and Fangio thought it was best for them to just run the clock and let the Titans have the final possession.

“It was totally my fault there,” Fangio added. “I had too much thought into what I was going to call next on defense and I missed it.”

Fangio initially mentioned right after the game that he was banking on the Titans' Stephen Gostkowski's kicking struggles all evening long and didn't want to call a timeout and possibly give the Broncos an opportunity to draw a play and bring them closer. Obviously, with how the things turned out, Fangio risk blew up on his face and the newly acquired kicker converted the 25-yard, game-winning kick for the Titans.

It's good to see the second-year head coach humble himself and admit his crucial error. If he wants to propel the Broncos back to playoff contention, he would need to quickly learn from these mental mistakes and move past the opening day dud.
