The Cleveland Browns have recently placed quarterback Baker Mayfield on the COVID-19 reserve list. The team is currently having their bye in Week 9 but will be following intensive protocols once they come back, as per NFL Network‘s Ian Rapoport.

ESPN‘s Jake Trotter further clarified that the quarterback didn't contract the virus himself but rather came into contact with a staff member who did. Baker Mayfield will be allowed to join practices after he yields another negative test result.

The Browns organization also released its own statement with regards to the emerging developments surrounding the situation, via ESPN‘s Adam Schefter.

This reserve list category was created for a player who either tests positive for COVID-19 or who has been quarantined after having been in close contact with an infected person or persons. Clubs may or may not disclose whether a player is in quarantine or tested positive for COVID-19.

Baker Mayfield will immediately self-isolate with hopes of being able to rejoin the team in time for their preparations for their Week 10 tilt against the Houston Texans. QB2 Case Keenum will slot in under center in the event that Mayfield can't gain clearance ahead of November 15.

The Browns are coming off a 16-6 loss at the hands of the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 8 en route to a 5-3 record midway through the 2020 NFL season. Hopefully, Mayfield will be able to make his return as his team needs a much-needed win against the struggling Texans to remain in the thick of the playoff race.
