Cleveland Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield struggled to help this team follow through on the hype in the 2019 campaign. It seems he is well aware that another lackluster year under center could have a major impact on his long-term future, both on and off the field.

Mayfield is now entering the third year of his rookie deal and will be eligible for an extension next offseason. According to Scott Petrak of The Chronicle-Telegram, he acknowledged that his performance this season will determine the price tag he is able to garner with his next deal:

“There's no doubt Year 3 is always a big year in these contracts timing-wise, everybody knows that. I'm not putting added pressure on myself. If we win, things will take care of themselves.”

Mayfield will have the benefit of using a few other notable quarterbacks as benchmarks for his looming extension. Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson are among those that are expected to break the bank in the near future.

Regardless, Mayfield still has yet to prove that he is in the same class as the aforementioned passers. Although he managed to show plenty of promise as a rookie, he regressed in Year 2 despite Cleveland's efforts to beef up his supporting cast on offense. Fortunately, he still has an opportunity to redeem himself if he can spark a resurgence in the 2020 NFL season.

The addition of two new tackles in Jack Conklin and Jedrick Wills Jr. along with tight end Austin Hooper should provide yet another significant boost to the Browns offense. Mayfield is hoping that it will be pay huge dividends once the time for negotiations rolls around next year.
