The Cleveland Browns face a bit of uncertainty at wide receiver at the moment. Josh Gordon will miss the start of training camp due to seek counseling for his “mental health and anxiety issues” and there’s no definitive timeline for his return as of yet. Could this prompt the Browns to seek a backup option?

Perhaps.

According to Mary Kay Cabot of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Browns general manager John Dorsey has admitted that they have had discussions about bringing in free-agent wide receiver Dez Bryant.

Bryant has yet to sign with a team since his release from the Dallas Cowboys in April. He turned down a three-year offer from the Baltimore Ravens and reportedly planned to wait until the start of training camp — which is right now — before signing.

It remains to be seen whether Bryant will sign with the Browns if they do indeed make him an offer. Bryant reportedly only has eyes for playing for a contender. And if Gordon does return by the start of the season, Bryant would be relegated to being the third option on the Browns’ wideout depth chart behind Gordon and Jarvis Landry.

Even if Gordon misses time, the Browns still have the likes of Landry, Corey Coleman, and rookie Antonio Callaway to call upon on their deep receiving corps, so signing a veteran wideout like Bryant isn’t an absolute necessity for them at this point.

Nevertheless, it's impossible to rule any scenario out, especially with Gordon's status moving forward still not completely clear.
