Freddie Kitchens is only halfway through his first season as head coach of the Cleveland Browns, but his job might already be on the line.

The Browns dropped to just 2-6 on the year following their 24-19 loss to the Denver Broncos on Sunday, making their chances of qualifying for the playoffs that much less likely through nine weeks.

Afterward, Kitchens said that his job security doesn't really bother him.

“It really doesn’t concern me,’’ said Kitchens, according to Mary Kay Cabot of The Cleveland Plain Dealer. “It’s not my decision. I’ve never worried about it before, I’m not worried about it now, I’m not going to worry about it in the future. I’ll just do the best job I can do.”

While Kitchens certainly deserves some blame for Cleveland's disappointing season, the players also need to shoulder some of that load, as quarterback Baker Mayfield said after the loss.

“It’s a topic for you guys,’’ Mayfield said of Kitchens' potential firing. “Within our building we know exactly what’s wrong. We haven’t executed. I think, like I said earlier, we had a good plan we just haven’t executed it. We’ll see how the guys handle it this week, but it’s got to be a singular focus. The preparation the last few games has been unbelievable, so we need to continue that.”

The Browns are now four games behind the Baltimore Ravens for first place in the AFC North, and to make matters worse, they are now two games behind the injury-riddled Pittsburgh Steelers.

Cleveland will host the Buffalo Bills next Sunday in search of its first home win of the year.
