Although the Cleveland Browns just acquired quarterback Tyrod Taylor from the Buffalo Bills, they are still likely to draft their quarterback of the future in the upcoming draft, possibly with the No. 1 overall pick.

But even if the Browns do pick up another QB, head coach Hue Jackson has nipped any potential quarterback controversy in the bud by unequivocally declaring that Taylor is his starter for next season, as Mary Kay Cabot of cleveland.com reports.

“I don't think that has anything to do with anything,” Jackson said about the possibility of the Browns drafting a QB No. 1 overall. “If that's the decision that we make as an organization to take a quarterback at one, then we will. But Tyrod's the starting quarterback. That's not going to change that.”

“There is no competition,” said Jackson. “He's going to be the starting quarterback.”

Jackson stressed that he does not want to do what he’s done for the last couple years, which is to throw another quarterback into the deep end by starting him as a rookie. The Browns went 0-8 under Cody Kessler in 2016 and 0-15 under DeShone Kizer last season. Instead, he’s going to let the young QB sit and learn behind Taylor.

On paper, Jackson’s plan does make a lot of sense. Young quarterbacks are generally not very good and could do with more time to develop before they take over the reins full-time. And in Taylor, they have a capable starter who should give them a better chance to win games next season.

However, it remains to be seen whether Jackson will be able to completely follow through with his plan. If Taylor struggles like so many Browns quarterbacks before him, the temptation will likely be great for Jackson to throw the rookie QB out there to show what he can do.
