Although the Cleveland Browns had generated plenty of hype heading into the 2019 NFL season, it quickly became evident that this team was far from reaching the Super Bowl expectations they had set. It seems there was even a point where wide receiver Jarvis Landry knew this year was not going to pan out like they had planned.

There were a number of times throughout the season where it became apparent that Cleveland was still a work in progress. Landry recalls being hit by the reality of the situation came down the final stretch during their losses to the Pittsburgh Steelers and Arizona Cardinals, via Complex Sports:

“I want to say the Pittsburgh, Arizona- That was very tough for me, for the whole team.”

Landry added that while the first couple of drives of the game are usually scripted, he found himself questioning the game plan beyond that.

“I just don't know after those 15 plays, what the plan was.”

The fact that Landry was able to hold out hope for so long is telling of just how much he wanted to make it work. Unfortunately, it was only a matter of time before even he was forced to accept the situation for what it was.

The Browns made headlines when they opted to roll with Freddie Kitchens as head coach despite his inexperience. This clearly came back to haunt them after a number of situations in which Kitchens made questionable play calls.

The onus will now be on new head coach Kevin Stefanski to show key players like Landry that he is more than capable of making the necessary adjustments.
