Defensive end Myles Garrett and the Cleveland Browns' defense dominated the Philadelphia Eagles in a 5-0 preseason victory on Thursday night. After the game, Garrett talked about the potential of the defense, per Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon Journal.

“We can be [dominant] from day one, and we’ve showed that actually the last three games when we’ve been in on those series,” Garrett said. “It just takes a little bit more clicking, a little bit more time on the practice field and more time really in the regular season. I know that once we get out there that first drive, after a couple plays, we’re going to see the tempo, and we’re going to see how we move at a different pace. And it’s going to be pretty impressive.”

The 22-year-old Garrett had a huge night, notching two sacks and two tackles for loss. His counterpart, Eagles left tackle Halapoulivaati Vaitai, admitted to getting smoked by the 2017 No. 1 pick.

“I got my ass kicked. Myles is a great player. I was out of control today. I just got beat today.”

The Browns' defense has enjoyed a strong preseason, and Garrett is looking to build on a solid rookie season in which he recorded seven sacks in 11 games after missing the first month of the year.

Cleveland suffered through a historically bad year in 2017 when it failed to win a single game. The Browns' defense ranked in the middle of the pack in terms of yards allowed, though they were 31st in points allowed, partially due to the abundance of turnovers by the league's lowest-scoring offense.

However, there is some optimism heading into this season thanks to players like Garrett and 2018 No. 1 overall pick Baker Mayfield. Expecting the Browns to be good may be a stretch, but perhaps they can actually rack up their share of victories in 2018.
